Flag bearers Charlotte Simoneau and Thomas Tittley to lead Team Canada into the Closing Ceremony of the Asunción 2025 Junior Pan American Games
Asunción, Paraguay (August 23, 2025) – Thirteen Canadians have earned direct qualification spots to the Lima 2027 Pan American Games by winning individual gold medals at the Asunción 2025 Junior Pan American Games held in Paraguay. Lima 2027 will serve as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games for many sports.
The athletes qualified for Lima 2027 are: Praise Aniamaka (Athletics, Men’s Triple Jump), Gabrielle Beaulieu (Taekwondo, Women’s 67kg), Rachel Chan (Badminton, Women’s Singles), Jennifer Elizarov (Athletics, Women’s Pole Vault), Izzy Goudros (Athletics, Women’s Heptathlon), Jadyn Keeler (Athletics, Women’s 10,000m), Victor Lai (Badminton, Men’s Singles), Maria Ouyahia (Karate, Women’s 55kg), Kate Pinsonneault (Water Ski, Women’s Jump), Dianna Proctor (Athletics, Women’s 400m), Charles Ross (Water Ski, Men’s Slalom), Charlotte Simoneau (Weightlifting, Women’s 69kg) and Jude Wheeler-Dee (Athletics, Men’s 1500m).
When competition concluded on Saturday, Team Canada athletes had captured a total of 63 medals (19 gold, 21 silver, 23 bronze) across 21 sport disciplines.
At 18 years old, Gabrielle Beaulieu captured gold in her first international multi-sport Games by defeating one of the top seeds, Ecuador’s Mayte Caicedo 2-1, and earned qualification for Lima 2027.
“Winning this spot and gold medal is one of the most beautiful moments of my life,” said Beaulieu. “I have worked hard for a long time to succeed at this event, and experiencing both the achievement and the joy of competition has given true meaning to all the hours of training. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this victory.”
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announced weightlifter Charlotte Simoneau and artistic gymnast Thomas Tittley as Team Canada’s flag bearers for the Asunción 2025 Closing Ceremony. The news was delivered to the athletes by Chef de Mission, Bernardo Alvarenga.
Tittley, from Montreal, Quebec, won gold in men’s floor exercise, silver in horizontal bar, and placed fifth in the men’s all-around event at Asunción 2025. The 17-year-old is the 2024 Canadian all-around champion in the 15-16 age group.
“It is a huge honour for me to be a flag bearer”, said Tittley. “This flag not only represents me, but a whole team and everyone who supports us day after day. Walking with this flag is to walk with the pride, courage and determination that we each hold. I will carry it with respect and gratitude and with a desire to give the best of myself to inspire and proudly represent our nation.”
Simoneau, of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, set a junior world record of 110kg in the snatch and a junior Americas record of 130kg in the clean and jerk. She won the gold medal in the women’s 69kg event by 20kg over her closest competitor with a junior Americas record total of 240kg. Earlier this year she won her second straight world junior title in the women’s 71kg event.
“This nomination as a flag bearer represents all the work I have done to this day”, said Simoneau. “This pushes me to work even harder to reach higher objectives. Participating at these Games has been a privilege and it gives me the chance to take part in even larger events. I want to congratulate all the Canadian athletes here at the Games who made our sports shine. It is an honour to carry the Canadian flag to conclude this amazing experience.”
157 athletes represented Team Canada in Asunción over 15 days of competition. In addition to the medal tally, Canadian highlights from the second edition of the Junior Pan American Games include:
- Both of Team Canada’s Opening Ceremony flag bearers reached the top of the podium: Rielle Bonne won gold in women’s synchronized trampoline alongside partner Melina Corriveau, while Victor Lai earned gold in men’s singles badminton.
- Rachel Chan captured back-to-back gold medals in women’s badminton singles (Cali 2021 and Asunción 2025).
- In athletics, Jadyn Keeler won the women’s 10,000m in 34:16.61, breaking the Junior Pan American Games record, and captured silver in the women’s 5000m.
- Water ski athletes Charles Ross and Kate Pinsonneault became the first-ever Junior Pan American Games champions in men’s slalom and women’s jump, respectively.
- Janna Hawash is Canada’s first archer to win a medal in the women’s individual event at the Junior Pan American Games (something that hasn’t happened at the Pan American Games in 42 years, since Caracas 1983).
- Jennifer Elizarov cleared 4.45m in the women’s pole vault to claim gold and set a Junior Pan American Games record, while Heather Abadie won silver with a height of 4.00m.
- Canada captured gold in both synchronized 10m platform diving events, with Katelyn Fung and Olympian Kate Miller winning on the women’s side, and Benjamin Tessier and Matt Cullen on the men’s.

The Junior Pan American Games provide athletes aged 23 and under, from across the Americas, a valuable opportunity to experience the culture of multi-sport Games early in their careers. With a focus on athlete development, high-performance preparation, and international competition exposure, the Junior Pan American Games have a growing significance in many sports’ performance pathways to the Pan American Games and Olympic Games.
