SkiAbility Grant Program 2021 – Applications Are Now Being Accepted.

A program of Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada (WSWC), SkiAbility is a comprehensive clinic outreach program, aimed at engaging and growing the participation rates of persons with a disability in towed water sports.

The SkiAbility program focuses on the Awareness to Train-Train stages of the Long-Term Athlete Development Model and the Foundations and Build the Skills levels of the NCCP.

With over 3.4 million Canadians with a disability, the SkiAbility program delivers clinics and lessons, across the country to skiers of all ages with various types of disabilities.

With the goal of:

    • Delivering SkiAbility programming in every province across Canada.
    • Making towed water sports more accessible to persons with a disability.
    • Growing the participation rates of persons with a disability in towed water sports.

WSWC is pleased to provide a grant program to support the growth and development of SkiAbility programming across Canada.

Grant Application Timeline

April 12th – Applications OPEN

June 30th – Application Deadline is June 30th, 2021. This may be extended depending on the impact of COVID19

July 24th – Funding Announcements. This may be extended depending on the impact of COVID19


Eligibility Criteria
SkiAbility grant applicants must:

  • Be a member in good standing with their Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) / WSWC
  • If delivering a clinic / program, have WSWC insurance or proof of equivalent coverage.
  • For 2021 the Skiability funding will be focused on supporting clinic and program delivery.
  • If COVID-19 leads to the cancellation of the majority of the season, WSWC will open applications for
    equipment funding at the end of the season.

Rules & Requirements
The following rules and requirements apply to all SkiAbility grant recipients.

    • Equipment funding requests will only be funded up to a max of 50% of the cost of the equipment.
    • Equipment receipts must be submitted for all equipment funding requests.
    • Coach developer training (NCCP training) is not eligible for funding.
    • All SkiAbility on water events must have a least one SkiAbility trained coach present and must have a SkiAbility or Fundamentals trained coach per tow boat providing SkiAbility services.
    • Coaches must be a member in good standing with their PSO / WSWC.
    • Grants must not be used for the benefit of organization employees or volunteers other than expense compensation.
    • If the grant recipient incurs fewer expenses than the money initially released, the grant recipient must return such excess funds to WSWC.
    • All SkiAbility participants, volunteers and coaches involved with the activities must be WSWC members. Please contact your Provincial Sport Organization for details.
    • All SkiAbility participants will be required to sign a WSWC waiver. Note: if the SkiAbility program is engaging individuals who have an intellectual disability, the waiver needs to be understood. If there isan intellectual disability participant, the individual may not understand the terms. In that case, there must be a parent or guardian that complete the WSWC Informed Consent and Assumption of Risk Agreement (Minors Waiver) or the individual will not be allowed to participate.
    • Program deliverables (as outlined below) is mandatory.

Notes on Funding Decisions

Note: The minimum available funds for the 2021 Skiability Grants will be $10,000. The total available Grant funding amount is based on available funds in the Adaptive budget, is subject to change and is at the discretion of the Adaptive Committee.

Clinic grants will be limited to a maximum of $500 per clinic day. Multi-Session or ongoing Programs may receive up to $1,000 for the season.

Funding amounts will be prioritized to applications that reach a larger group of participants and support the introduction of new participants to Adaptive programs. The Adaptive Committee will distribute the available 2021 grant funding towards Clinic/ Program funding, pending the potential impact of COVID-19 on the ability of organizations to deliver activities during the season.

Eligible Areas for Applications
The following areas will be considered for funding.


    • Equipment – updating and / or obtaining equipment specific to running an adaptive program.
    • Equipment must be adaptive specific – facility and common use equipment (such as for general water ski / wakeboard programs (non-adaptive) will not be funded even if just for the adaptive program).
    • Equipment will only be funded up to a maximum of 50% and based on submitted receipts
    • Note: if equipment has not been purchased at the time of application, a quote must be submitted at time of application.
    • Receipt(s) will be required before equipment funding will be issued.

Clinic Delivery

• Clinic delivery and first contact programs targeting new and existing athletes/ participants.
• Clinic delivery will only be funded up to a maximum of 50% capped at $500 per clinic day and
based on final reporting.

    • Eligible expenses to be consider for funding could include:
      • Training of volunteers
      • Boat rental or honorarium
      •  Fuel
      • Facility rental
    • Maximum Funding Levels:
      • Maximum cost for facility rental: $500/day.
      • Maximum cost for boat rental or honorarium: $300/day.
      • Maximum cost for fuel: $200/day.
      • Food/ water: $100/day (or $5 per person per day).

All SkiAbility grant recipients will be required to submit the following:

  1. Signed Letter of Agreement – must be completed before funding will be issued. If the signed Agreement is not returned to WSWC within 7 days of receipt of the Agreement by the applicant, the agreed to funding resources will be reallocated to other programs.
  2. Program report & detailed participant list (including waivers) – post event / program, within 30 days of the conclusion of the program. If all required information is not received by WSWC within the 30-day time frame, all remaining agreed to funding will be forfeit as outlined in the Letter ofAgreement.

Funding Schedule
Grant recipients will be issued funding in two installments:

    • 50% to be issued upon submission of signed agreement and proof of insurance.
    • 50% to be issued upon submission of Detailed Participant List & Waivers and Program Report.

Please note that all of the deadlines, funding allocations and decisions may be altered at the discretion of the Adaptive Council based on the regulatory, legal and social impacts of COVID 19 throughout 2021. WSWC will endeavour to keep the towed water sports community updated on any changes to the Skiability Funding Program as necessary based on changing COVID 19 realities.
