Auckland, New Zealand – Team Canada is making waves at the 2025 IWWF University World Championships, with several athletes advancing to the finals in a historic event taking place from February 26 to March 2, 2025, in Auckland, New Zealand.
The first day of finals is set for today, Saturday, March 1, 2025 (local time), with the second day of finals following on Sunday, March 2, 2025 (local time). Canada is well represented in the Open Men and Women Jump, Trick, and Slalom finals, with outstanding performances already seen in the prelims.
Nellie Allard of Canada will be competing in the Open Women Jump Finals, currently sitting in 4th place with a jump of 41.3m (135ft) from the prelims.
George Malinovski, also representing Canada, is set to compete in the Open Men Jump Finals after earning his place with a 51.8m (170ft) jump in the prelims.
In the Open Women Trick Finals, Hannah Stopnicki from Canada will be the athlete to watch, as she secured the top seed following the prelims with a score of 6790 points.
Malinovski will also compete in the Open Men Trick Finals, having earned his place with a score of 5830 points in the prelims.
On the second day of finals, Nellie Allard will compete in the Open Women Slalom Finals. After a strong performance in the prelims, where she ran 5@13m/32off, Allard entered the finals in 6th place.
The IWWF University World Championships in New Zealand marks a significant milestone in the world of water skiing. This is the first-ever IWWF World Titled traditional water ski event to be hosted by New Zealand and the first University World Championships since the IWWF’s separation from the FISU World University Championships. The event showcases athletes aged 17 to 25, all full-time students in good standing at accredited universities, demonstrating the perfect blend of academic and athletic excellence.
The 2025 IWWF University Worlds also signify the beginning of a new era for university-level water skiing, with this event expected to become a recurring competition under the “IWWF University Worlds” banner. The next edition of the competition is projected to take place in 2026, with a possible expansion to include multiple sport disciplines in the future.
